Why the San Francisco flavor ban is bogus!

If you haven’t heard, there is sad news in the world of vaping. It has been voted, at a scale of 68% to the losing 32%, that as of April next year (2019), sales of flavored e-liquid and flavored tobacco of all kinds will be banned in the city of San Francisco. Vape supporters are still trying to fight that battle that classifies vaping and vape juice as a tobacco product, but since the ruling by the FDA last year that vape is considered tobacco, and since e-liquid is flavored, it makes it apart of the flavored tobacco ban. This ban will also put restrictions on other tobacco products such as menthol cigarettes, small cigars, blunt wraps, and flavored hookah tobacco.

The “yes” voters in the Prop E campaign made a large emphasis that vaping is a branch of smoking, and that it is a sort of “candied tobacco.” They also made claims that the vaping industry is just as much a part of the hated tobacco company. This is highly ironic as vape businesses and tobacco business are clearly in direct competition with one another and vaping is considered by all, an alternative to smoking.

Many businesses will be harshly affected by this ban, from the large tobacco companies to the gas stations, hookah bars, and most prominently small tobacco shops and vape shapes, which will likely take the largest hit. There are more flavored tobacco and flavored vape juice bans on their way, these bans will start in major cities specifically such as New York and Chicago, and will likely make their way across other states.

One of the most prominent reasons these bans are affecting vaping as well as tobacco products is the unawareness of many non-smokers in not knowing that vapes have been ruled by the FDA as tobacco products. It is believed that many non-smokers would actually be in favor of supporting vaping as a whole as it actually tends to eliminate tobacco cigarettes from public environments which are actually harmful and disruptive in second-hand terms. Many voters only have the intention of eliminating true tobacco products and are unaware that they are also voting to eliminated vaping products.

There is, of course, another side to this to be considered, in that some parents believe that vaping is a gateway to smoking tobacco cigarettes. In this case, the opposing side is aware of and intentionally fighting to ban not only traditionally tobacco cigarettes but also vaping devices. It is strongly believed, though by vaping advocates that this is largely untrue and that vaping does immensely more good than it does bad. What is being overlooked is that just as many young teenagers and high schoolers will engage in smoking traditional tobacco cigarettes regardless of if vaping exists or not as this has been going on for years and years already before vaping was even invented.

From the perspective of an e-juice store in Arlington, what it comes down to is that banning various vaping products will, in the end, benefit no one, except perhaps large-scale tobacco companies who want to once again encourage the smoking of traditional tobacco companies. While it has been shown that e-cigarettes and various vaping devices are 95% safer than traditional tobacco cigarettes, who are you really helping by banning one of the things that make vaping so great, the flavors?
