Vaping and Pregnancy: What You Need to Know

Many women come across the dilemma of what to do about their smoking habit when they become pregnant. Many quit cold turkey, some don’t quit, some switch to the patch or gum, and many turn their habit from smoking cigarettes to smoking E-cigarettes. Frankly, the best thing to do when you are pregnant is to not put any foreign or uncertain chemicals into your body. Because vaping is in the “newer” category, doctors haven’t been able to do a whole lot of research on the possible effects of smoking E-cigarettes while pregnant. Many women do not want to take any chances and therefore they quit all forms of smoking or vaping entirely, and ideally, that is the best and safest route; but for some women, it just isn’t that easy.

The research on smoking e-cigarettes [with levels of nicotine] is comparable to that of using the patch or chewing the gum, it is evident that these are safer choices, as these alternatives do not contain carbon monoxide, and contain less of the ‘harmful’ chemicals than those found in regular cigarettes. Evidence as a whole suggests that e-cigarettes are at least 95% safer than smoking regular cigarettes. Women need to be cautious with all of their various consumptions during pregnancy, but what it comes down to is the “lesser” of the two in terms of potential harm.

One thing is for certain, vaping is a much safer alternative to smoking cigarettes, and if it is a much safer alternative for you and those around you, then it is predicted to be a much safer alternative for someone who is pregnant. In any case, the best thing you can do if you do vape while pregnant, is to lower or completely eliminate your nicotine intake. What is under estimated, is that for many people, the simple act of lighting up a cigarette and taking it from hand to mouth is the more of an addictive habit than the intake of the nicotine. For this reason, you should test out this theory yourself. Eliminate the nicotine completely from your vaping cigarette, and do your best to maintain the zero-intake. You may find that the action was the more addictive characteristic of the habit than the actual nicotine. If that’s not the case for you, try and keep your nicotine levels as low as possible, if you have a high-quality e-cigarette, you’re unlikely to need more than 1.2% nicotine.
The best thing you can do is completely eliminate nicotine if you are pregnant, but if not, then using an alternative nicotine product, like an e-cigarette, is your best option. If you do avoid cigarettes, you will have the best chances of a healthy baby.
