Everything You Need to Know About E-juice

Often when people first start vaping or are considering it, one of the first questions that pop into their heads is the question “what exactly is in vape liquid?” You may also hear or refer to e-juice as e-liquid, vape juice, or vaping liquid. Many people also ask the question, “is e-juice harmful?” The truth is that a lot of rumors have been spread about the “harsh” chemicals in e-juice, etc., but we are here to tell you that those rumors are not true.

E-juice is the fluid that is used in vapes or e-cigarettes to create the vapor. The vaporizer heats up the e-juice with a coil to about 200 up to 400 degrees, which initiates the process of turning it into vapor when you inhale. It is typically made of 3 basic ingredients, not including the nicotine, which is the only ingredient that is truly controversial in terms of health and harm. Regardless, e-cigarettes are a much healthier alternative to smoking regular tobacco cigarettes. The good news is that you control how much nicotine you add to your e-juice, which many people like to gradually lessen over time.

What is e-juice made out of?

The 3 basic ingredients that make up most Arlington e-juice out there are either propylene glycol (PG) and/or vegetable glycerin (VG), food flavoring, and water. They are typically at a consistency of about 90% PG or VG, and 10% food grade flavoring and nicotine. The PG or VG serve as a part of the consistency and to smooth out the distribution of the ingredients.

When comparing the two, PG wicks faster, makes for stronger flavors, and a harder throat hit. VG wicks slower, has less flavor intensity, a softer throat hit, and higher density. Rumor is that these two ingredients are harmful when in reality they are not and are actually used in thousands of cosmetic and food products that we consume and use every day.

The flavoring in e-juice is like that of food flavoring and range in thousands of different variations and choices. The flavoring part of the e-juice often contains sucralose to create for the sweet effect that is popular in many flavors of e-juice. This flavoring is the same type that is used in foods, and it is safe to consume.

When it comes to the nicotine, you as the vaper have the choice as to how high or low you want your nicotine levels to be. There are a few different options to choose from. It is best to get your nicotine levels as low as you can for health reasons, and many users do this gradually over time while some even eliminate the nicotine altogether.

  • Very low – 3 mg/mL; 0.3%
  • Low – 6mg/mL; 0.6%
  • Medium low – 12mg/mL; 1.2%
  • Medium high – 18-24mg/mL; 1.8%
  • Very high – 36mg/mL;3.6%

How to store your e-juice

E-juice can go bad, so it is important that you store it properly. Heat, direct sunlight, and oxygen are e-liquid’s biggest enemies and will quickly shorten its lifespan. Although e-juice doesn’t like heat, it also doesn’t like to be too cold, so we don’t suggest that you store it in the fridge. It is best to store your e-liquid in a cool, dark, dry cabinet. Make sure your bottles are tightly sealed. If you store your e-juice properly, it can have a shelf life of about 2 years.
